Abyssal Dream
McGill University - School of Architecture

This film is an exploration of empty space. It examines ‘liminal space’, which is the in-between – turning architecture into an ephemeral, temporal event. In this case, light and shadow are sculpting space, defining spatial boundaries, which the body enters and exits. Abyssal Dream explores sublime and vacuous landscapes that blur the boundary between the material world and that of the imagination.

Creator: Simon McKenzie
Actor: Kyle Leroux
Soundscape: Simon McKenzie & the Waterloo Architecture Class of 2014 musicians.
Special thanks to Alec Fraser, Ashley Whalen, & Nigel Goodwin

This film is a product of Simon McKenzie’s MArch Thesis at McGill University.

Palaestra - Fight Scene
Dragonfly Productions
2015 Calgary One-Act Play Festival

This video was projected onto the stage during the final fight scene of Nino Benvenuti, the Italian Boxer. The images are a mixture of historical photography and art. Much of the art is by the great rennaissance artists, though some original work by Simon McKenzie is also included. The video is accompanied by original music by composer Nigel Goodwin. The actor's voice that is heard was recorded at an early read-through during the beginning stages of the production.

The Hobbit
2015 Storybook Theatre

Under the direction of Haysam Kadri, Simon played the Role of Gollum in Storybook Theatre's 'The Hobbit'. Simon relied on his martial arts background to express the physical tendancies of such a tortured creature. As character development, he studied the anatomy and biomechanics of Gollum through a series of sketches, focussing on the creature's movements, facial expression, and skeletal and muscular structure.

Along with the other actors in the production, Simon was challenged to delve deep into the psychology of his character. For his portrail of Gollum, Simon received the award for the Top Supporting Actor in the 2015 Calgary ACTS.
